Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed Bonds
How do I report my Bond Certificate as Lost, Stolen or Destroyed?
- As soon as possible, contact Customer Service for Certificated Bonds.
- In the case of stolen bond certificates, please notify your local police department and provide us with a copy of their report number.
To avoid unnecessary delays, please have the following information available when contacting us:
- Complete bond certificate serial numbers(s) and the exact name as it appeared on the certificate.
- Police report number (if applicable)
Bond Replacement Process
- Once we are notified of the need for bond certificate replacement, a waiting period of 120 calendar days starts. The waiting period applies to both matured certificates and unmatured certificates.
- After the 120-day waiting period, you are required to contact Customer Service again to initiate the replacement process.
- A Bond of Indemnity (BofI) form will be sent to you.
- The BofI will need to be completed and signed in the presence of a Commissioner (e.g. for taking Affidavits) or a Notary Public (e.g. lawyer, Justice of peace, town or city hall clerk)
- Specific instructions regarding submission will accompany the BofI form.
The Bank of Canada has arranged a program for you to obtain Bonds of Indemnity from The Guarantee Company of North America (GCNA) at very favourable pricing. This program is available exclusively through an insurance broker, HKMB HUB International (HKMB HUB).
Below is a table listing the premium fee charged by GCNA based on the total amount of the lost certificate(s) (as stated in section 4 of the Bond of Indemnity).
Premium Fee charged by GCNA
| Total Amount of Certificate(s) (including par value plus accumulated interest) | $100.00 – $1,000.00 | $1,000.01 – $3,500.00 | $3,500.01 – $100,000.00 |
| Fixed Price | $25.00 | $65.00 | |
| Percentage | 2.00% |
Should you own certificate(s) where the total amount exceeds $100,000, or if you reside outside of Canada, HKMB HUB International will assist you in finding a surety/bonding company that will provide surety services. Please note that the premium fees may differ in these cases.
Once HKMB HUB International has received your completed documentation, along with the associated premium fee payment, a replacement certificate(s) for your unmatured certificate(s) or a cheque for your matured certificate(s) will be issued. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for this portion of the process to be completed.
